Pinecone Rendering

I'm finally done with this son of a bitch. Still needs a small details pass and the shadow basically needs to be re-done to be smoother but it was due today and it's unlikely I'll come back to fix it. Overall though I'm happy with the amount of color I managed to get into the final rendering and it's my first time really painting in Photoshop.

Temperature block in, with graphite rendering underneath.

Overall blocking, I was using straight color without much value at first, which probably helped keep as much color as I had in the final. You can see my palette on the right.

Final rendered pass, as I said earlier the shadow still needs a decent amount of work. It's way too blotchy.

Portfolio Sketchbook

So longtime no update, here's a sketch dump from the mandatory-passed-portfolio sketchbook I filled up over this past winter break.

Adventures in Finals Land.

Finals, the beautiful time of year when everyone plays How Long Can You Go Without Sleep. Thankfully, I'm finished with most of my finals.

Here's one of them, a Mastercopy for ANI 55. Unfortunately my professor did not provide the name of the original artist, but dead russian dudes know wazz good. The other thing is a plein air study of a tree by the airport. It was kinda 'maney to have planes flying low overhead as I dug down in the dirt and tried to paint dat tree.

Lil Somethin' On The Side

These are just some things I did for fun recently. The first's drawn from the cap of a beer that's brewed locally in my hometown, the second of a friend of mine, and the third are some of the silhouettes of downtown San Jose.

Figures

These are quick gestural figures drawn from one or two minute nude poses. For those who of you don't know, figure drawing is the art of drawing the human...you guessed it! Figure! Haha anyways, the life of a figure is in the gesture, or the motion of the pose.

This is the first thing that should be laid down and then if there's time build on top of it. No matter how good the rendering and shading of a figure drawing, without a good underlying gesture the drawing will ultimately fall flat.

Location Studies

To kick off the content I present a batch of location studies from ANI 28 last semester. Drawn from various spots around San Jose, this was the first time I genuinely enjoyed utilizing the laws of perspective. I also appreciated the ballpoint pen I was drawing with; using lighter lines as lay in and then going over them with heavy strokes for the final.
